There is wide agreement on the need for systems thinking to address complexity in chronic disease prevention but there insufficient understanding of how such approaches are operationalised research. Ison and Straw propose that complexity, right balance must be struck between ‘systemic’ ‘systematic’ paradigms. We examined nature characteristics this relationship a series six qualitative case studies Data comprised 29 semi-structured interviews with 16 participants, online documents. The analysis combined inductive methods from grounded theory theoretically informed framework analysis. Systemic systematic ways working varied across each as whole, within dimensions case. Further, interplay systemic was described along dynamic continuum variable proportions, greater emphasis aspects balanced by less focus systematic, vice versa. By expanding boundaries exploring research, we gained empirical potential scope paradigms addressing inherent value being more explicitly conscious bilingual both so their respective strengths may utilised. Our findings coherent theoretical frame better understand existing
